Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI)

Short Description/Objective: 

The project concerns the purchase of 10 class C vessels for the needs of the Port and Marine Police, aiming to strengthen its operational capabilities for surveillance and protection of the coastline, the ports and the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus. In addition, 20 members and 10 technicians of the Port and Marine Police will be trained in the use, maintenance and handling of the vessels and in the operation of all instruments, machinery, navigation and telecommunication devices.

The main purpose of the purchase of the 10 class C vessels (RIB – RIGID INFLATABLE BOATS) is to upgrade the existing naval fleet of the Port and Marine Police, contributing to the achievement of the following objectives:

1. More effective control and surveillance of maritime borders in cases of increased risk of illegal migration.
2. Improving early detection, identification and intervention at the maritime borders.
3. Strengthen the operational capabilities of the Port and Marine Police to ensure the successful accomplishment of its duties.
4. Conduct operations and patrols more swiftly, while decreasing fuel consumption.

    

Expected Benefits/Outcomes: 

The supply and use of the 10 new class C vessels will significantly upgrade the fleet of the Port and Marine Police. This will strengthen its operational capabilities and contribute to the effective control of the maritime borders of the Republic of Cyprus.

In particular, early detection, recognition and intervention at maritime borders will be improved, ensuring control and surveillance in cases of increased risk of illegal migration, while enabling faster operations and decreasing fuel consumption.
