On 28 March 2024, a conference was held at Ktima Kousioumi in Nicosia, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, officials/representatives of the Union of Communities, the Union of Municipalities and the EU, as well as the stakeholders involved, on the implementation of the Operation of Strategic Importance “Strengthening the Social Welfare Services”. The project, with a total budget of €48 million, is implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA2021-2027”, co-funded by the EU.
During the conference, Memorandums of Cooperation were signed between the Social Welfare Services (SWS), the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and Mayors/Presidents of Community Councils for the implementation of the “Neighbourhood Social Worker” action in Cyprus.
The signing of 39 Memorandums of Cooperation, made under the auspices of the President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, covering 17 Municipalities and 22 Community clusters, marks the beginning of the expansion of the “Neighbourhood Social Worker” across the island and highlights the importance of synergies for the provision of better and higher quality services to citizens.
The “Neighbourhood Social Worker” action is a successful synergy between the State and Local Authorities, aiming at the early identification and management of challenges, prevention and two-way communication with citizens.
This innovative institution will be implemented as of May 2024 in a total of 106 Municipalities and Communities through 29 programmes across Cyprus, involving 32 Social Workers and 10 Supervisors. It aims to support citizens in a direct and effective way, as well as assist Local Authorities in improving the implementation of their work in the fields of social welfare and social cohesion.
